CA1061 French Empire 'Psyche and the Golden Box' Mantel Clock
Very elegant example of a French Empire gilt and pantinated bronze mantel clock depicting Psyche Opening the Golden Box, the fourth task given her by Venus to prove she was worthy of her son Cupid. Engine turned dial, later updated 8 day twin train brocot movement. The gilt bronze case decorated with classical motifs and a relief of a sleeping cupid. A very similar version of this clock can be seen in 'Catalogo de Relojes del Patrimonio Nacional' Plate 198 p216. Case circa 1830, movement circa 1880.
