Outstanding fine quality Napoleonic Consulate or early Empire period Light Cavalry Superior Officer's Campaign sword. Elegant, light and beautifully balanced sabre with a bold checkered cross diagonal fluted ebony grip and strong floral engravings to the hilt. Beautifully engraved scabbard in overall good condition with some small dinks from heavy campaign field use, original rings and classic assymetrical steel drag. Original faded red cloth spacer. Interesting mameluke style gold wash designs to small section of the blade at the ricasso. Spine engraved ‘Pierre Guillaume Knecht fabriquant à Solingen’, one of the great sword makers of his generation. A remarkable sword that was certainly used on campaign and as such a witness to history. Circa 1805.
