Outstanding fine quality Napoleonic Consulat or early Empire period Light Cavalry Superior Officer's Campaign sword sabre. Elegant, light and beautifully balanced sword with a bold checkered, criss cross diagonal fluted ebony grip and srongly engraved Empire floral designs to the hilt. Beautifully engraved Empire designs to front of scabbard, overall good condition with some dents and dinks from heavy campaign field use, original rings and classic assymetrical steel drag. Original faded red cloth spacer. Blade has interesting mameluke style gold wash designs just at the ricasso; spine engraved ‘Pierre Guillaume Knecht fabriquant à Solingen’, one of the great sword makers of his generation. A remarkable sword that was certainly used on campaign and a witness to history. Circa 1805.
