CA0568 Rare French Empire Oath of the Horatii Mantel Clock

Rare example of an early 19th Century Classic French Empire gilt bronze and marble clock, based on the Jacques-Louis David revolutionary painting of the ‘Oath of the Horatii’. Painted in 1784 it idealises personal sacrifice for the good of country, and versions of this clock were popular in early 19th century France and beyond - often gracing palaces across Europe. This good quality version is in the rarer gilt bronze and ‘marbre vert’. Circa 1815. Eight day silk suspension movement, porcelain face with Breguet style hands.
