CA0857 Rare Grand Tour Silenus Lamp Stand

Very rarely seen 19th Century Neapolitan Grand Tour bronze candelabra or oil lamp stand in the manner of the Chiurazzi foundry in Naples. After the Roman original discovered in Pompeii/Herculaneum and now in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Stepped base with paw feet surmounted by a central figure of the satyr Silenus, tutor to the wine god Dionysus. Two tree like arms extend from the back terminating with circular flat platforms for oil lamps to stand on, as demonstrated on the original in the Naples museum. Generally sold minus the oil lamps to use as candelabrum using short stubby candles. Beautiful, well executed, verdigris 'archaeological' finish. Italy, circa 1880.
