Picture of Pair of Berlin Iron cabinet busts of Goethe and Schiller

Pair of Berlin Iron cabinet busts of Goethe and Schiller

A good quality and rare pair of mid 19th Century bronze patinated Berlin iron cabinet busts of the German writer and pioneer of the Grand Tour Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the poet and philospher Friedrich Schiller, unsigned but possibly by Leonhard Posch who produced a series of cast iron portrait busts of important writers and philosphers of the early 19th Century. The portrayal of Schiller with the longer hair would seem to be based on the sculpture by Johann Heinrich von Dannecker (1748-1851) and Goethe after a bust by Christian Daniel Rauch (1777-1857). Inscribed 'Schiller' and 'Goethe' respectively. Rare pair. Berlin, mid 19th Century.
