CA349 18th Century Print from the Story of Judith and Holofernes

Stunning 18th Century Italian large engraving of Judith's beheading of Holofernes by Giuseppe Zocchi (c. 1711–1767) and Joseph (Giuseppe) Wagner (c.1706-1780) printmaker. This story was the subject of many paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Taken from the Book of Judith: the story tells of the Assyrain general Holofernes who was about to destroy Judith's home, the city of Bethulia. Judith, a beautiful widow, was able to enter the tent of Holofernes because of his desire for her, overcome with drink he passes out and is decapitated by Judith. Inscription to base of print and credit for Zocchi and Wagner. 19th century black painted wood and gesso frame.
