Fascinating early 19th Century portrait of an important, unidentified French Naval 'Capitaine de Vaisseau', Captain of a Ship of the Line from the early Empire period. Painted in resplendant uniform wearing four medals including a Legion d'Honneur and large golden epaulettes embellished with french naval insignia. Battles of Nile/Trafalgar period. Slight similarities to Jean Jacques Etienne Lucas Captain of the Redoubtable at the Battle of Trafalgar. Oil on canvas. French, circa 1805.
