Fine Pair of Grand Tour Bronze Dancing Fauns on Siena marble

A very fine pair of mid 19th Century patinated bronzes of the two most famous statues of the Grand Tour, The Dancing Fauns, after the antique. The Dancing Faun of Pompeii was excavated in 1830 in what became known as the House of the Faun, possibly the most famous building in Pompeii and can now be seen in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. The Dancing Faun with Crotala (cymbals) and scabellum (an ancient greek percussion instrument) is after a Roman copy of a Hellenistic marble original in the Tribuna Gallery in the Uffizi. Stunning pair, beautifully cast and chased, with a lovely even patination presented on a stepped siena marble base. Italy, circa 1850.
