CA0560 Rare large Grand Tour bronze of the Fontana del Tritone

Superb quality, rare, and of impressive size Grand Tour patinated library bronze model of the beautiful Fontana del Tritone in the Piazza Barberini in Rome by the most famous baroque sculptor of his generation Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The original fountain, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII, depicts a striking mythical scene of Triton with head back drinking from a conch shell. He sits on a large open shell held aloft by four dolphins with a central plaque containing the papal helraldic coat of arms of his patron. Stunning example. Sitting on an equaliy beautiful associated Siena marble stand with black marble panels inset with pietra dura images of lily of the valley and forget-me-nots and crests to the side. Further Lapis Lazuli panels to the corners. Italy, Rome, circa 1850.
