CA0605 Obelisk called Cleopatra's Needle at Alexandria in Ashford Black marble

Nice example of a late 19th century Victorian period Ashford Black marble model of Cleopatra's Needle on a stepped block base. Located on the Victoria Embankment in Westminster, London, thhe obelisk was presented to the United Kingdom in 1819 by the ruler of Egypt and Sudan in commemoration of the victories of Nelson at the Battle of the Nile and Abercromby at the Battle of Alexandria. Etched hieroglyphics to the front face and inscribed 'Obelisk called Cleopatra's Needle at Alexandria'. English, circa 1880.
