Grand Tour bronze of the Abduction of a Sabine Woman after Giambologna

Rare Italian 19th century Grand Tour rich dark brown patinated library bronze of the Abduction of a Sabine Woman also known as The Rape of Proserpina after Giambologna. Well cast version set on a later Carrara block marble base. The model for this two-figure composition was probably made around 1579, judging from a letter confirming the delivery to the Duke of Parma and now in the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. It is believed that this composition is an earlier version of Giambologna's famous Abduction of The Sabine Women in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. A near identical model can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
