Important Monumental French Empire Achilles Clock

Important, extremely rare and fine early 19th century French Empire palatial sized gilt bronze ormolu and Marbre Vert mantle clock attributed to Pierre-François Feuchere (1737-1823) depicting Achilles swearing to avenge the death of Patroclus represented by the funerary urn containing his ashes. The large well cast and chased figure of Achilles with his sword raised, his armour resting on the floor sits on a marble base with applied lictors bundles and low relief scenes depicting the life of Achilles. The silk suspension movement signed 'Lepine Hrg Du Roi' is housed in a stunning fire gilded classically designed shield with fantastical winged beasts, scrolls and winged victories. The model for this clock was created in 1807 by Etienne Blavet (1751-1827) and probably sold to Pierre-François Feuchere. Beautiful high quality late Empire clock. An example, formerly in the collection of the Duc de Caraman, is illustrated in Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. 1, Munich, 1986, fig. 5.6.3. France, circa 1815.
