CA0259 Impressive Regency Torchere by Humphrey Hopper

Impressive and dramatic rare Regency period neoclassical ebonised stucco vestal floor standing torchere by Humphrey Hopper (1767–1844) set upon an associated classical column base. Beautifully modelled flowing classically draped female holding aloft a storm lamp, good quality evocative, almost gothic example. Signed and dated 'Mar 7 1816 H.Hopper London'. Hopper trained as a stone mason and in 1801 at the age of 36, enrolled in the Royal Academy to study sculpture winning a silver medal in 1802. He produced tasteful decorative plaster work including classical nymphs and vestals. English, circa 1816.
