CA0250 Fine French Empire mantel clock by LePaute

Very fine French Empire period gilt bronze ormolu clock depicting an allegory of faithfullness, loyalty and steadfastness with a standing figure of Cupid holding a butterfly and flaming torch and a staff with a floral wreath bordered panel inscribed 'Fidelite Constance'. A central plinth with a resting bow and quiver nestling below a tazza with lovebird handles. Eight day silk suspension movement with white enamel dial signed 'LEPAUTE A PARIS' probably for Pierre-Basile Lepaute (1750–1843) who took over the famous clockmaking dynasty after the deaths of Jean-André Lepaute (1720-1789) and Jean-Baptiste Lepaute (1727-1802). Breguet style hands. Set on a block plinth base with applied ormolu mounts of floral swags and flaming torches. Beautiful example, well cast and chiselled with both matt and burnished mercury gilt bronze finishes. France, circa 1815.
