CA0243 Large Grand Tour bronze Spinario stamped Nelli Roma

Fine, late 19th century Grand Tour patinated bronze library sculpture of Spinario on a typical Roman Marmo Rosso Levanto and Belgian Black marble plinth base, of good size, after the original Greco-Roman Hellenistic sculpture in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Capitoline Museum, Rome. Depicting a boy withdrawing a thorn from the sole of his foot it is often referred to as the Boy with the Thorn or Fedele (Fedelino). Well cast good even dark brown patina signed 'Nelli Roma'. The Nelli foundry in Rome was established around 1880 and became the leading sculpture foundry in Rome up to 1900 when Nelli moved their operations to Russia at the court of the Tsar from 1900-1905. Italy, pre-1900 as stamp includes 'Roma'. Fine example in good condition with it's original base. Rome, circa 1890.
