CA0204 Early 19th century Grand Tour Bronze of Damoxenos by Canova

Superb very early 19th century Italian Grand Tour patinated bronze of Damoxenos of Syracuse, one of Canova's Pugilists. In 1795 Canova began working on the preparatory drawings of these subjects for sculptures. A year later, in 1796, both models were completed. In 1802, the two statues, along with Perseus Triumphant, were purchased by Pope Pius VII and can be seen to this day in the famous Octagonal Courtyard in the Vatican in Rome. Rich dark almost black patina. Mounted on superb rare Cipollino Mandolato marble plinth with a carved black marble base. Italian, possibly Rome, circa 1800-1805.
