19th Century Restauration period gilt bronze ormolu mantel clock surmounted by a figure of the preeminent French letter writer the Marquise de Sévigné (1626-1696). The Marquise de Sévigné was a French aristocrat, revered in France as one of the great icons of French 17th Century literature, celebrated for her wit and the vividness of her writing. A popular subject for clocks in the late Restauration / Louis Philippe periods of the 19th Century. 8 day silk suspension movement. This clock has been cleaned and looks fantastic. The movement has not been checked or serviced but is offered as is to keep the cost down. France, circa 1840.
