CA0859 Small Grand Tour Capriccio Oil Painting

Sweet early 19th Century, small italianate landscape Grand Tour capriccio painting of figures in front of ancient ruins. Possibly the Palatine Hill in Rome. Oil on board, stamped 'John Metcalfe' to reverse and remains of an old label for 'T' Rushworth and Sons' Durham. John Metcalfe the maker of the panel is referenced in Edward Baines Directory of the County of York as working in Frenchgate in 1823. Timothy Rushworth is registered as working in Durham in 1840. English or French in the manner, or a follower, of Herman van Swanevelt (1600-1665).
