Grand Tour Bronze of Perseus Triumphant after Canova

Italian Grand Tour rich dark brown patinated cabinet bronze of 'Perseus Triumphant' after Antonio Canova (1757-1822). The original marble version was produced in 1800 and is now displayed in the Octagonal Court (formerly the Cortile delle Statue) in the Vatican Museums in Rome. Many of the Grand Tour versions of this statue, like this one, incorporate the dripping blood from the severed Medusa head, probably in recognition of the more famous statue of Perseus by Cellini in Florence. This is the rarer version by Canova. Italy, circa 1860.
