Pair of Neoclassical Relief Gilt Plaques with Faux Tortoiseshell Frames

Stunning and rare pair of early 19th century Grand Tour gilt bronze classical plaques illustrating the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. A popular theme of the Neoclassical period they illustrate the idea of love gained and love lost. These exact figures can be seen on some of the most important clocks of the high Empire period in France often attributed to Denière & Matelin. They are described as 'La Brouille' and 'Le Raccommodement', The Quarrel and The Reconciliation. Rarely seen as a pair. Presented in a pair of original deep painted faux tortoiseshell cushioned frames with an ebonised border. French, early 19th century circa 1815.
