CA0787 Magnificent 'Au Bon Sauvage' Africa Mantel Clock

Interesting example of a late French Directoire period patinated and gilt bronze 'Au Bon Sauvage', 'L'Afrique' clock after designs by Jean Simon Deverberie. The figure is emblematic of Africa with a bow and arrow flanked by a lioness. Beautiful pearl earings and painted eyes. The base features a vision of African children playing, fishing and hunting. Sitting on four tropical tree stump feet. This clock is identical to another clock that appeared in issue 100 of l'Estampille in August 1978 which featured an article on 'Les Pendules au Negre'. In that version the African children are patinated. Eight day silk suspension movement. Unsigned white enamel dial with Breguet moon hands. French, circa 1800.
