CA0536 Fine French Empire mantel clock by Revel

Beautiful quality, rare, early 19th century French Empire period fire gilt bronze ormolu clock depicting a river goddess or water nymph. White enamel dial signed simply 'Revel' for Joseph-Marie Revel, master 1775, a celebrated and well-respected clockmaker of considerable ability and note during the Empire period, one of a few who signed their clocks with just their name. He died in Paris in 1811. This clock was probably made when he was working from his premises in Palais Tribunat from 1804-1806. Superbly cast and chased case with a large classical figure carrying an amphora jug to collect water from a fountain. The double fountain spurts from the mouth of a fish at the top and is decorated with a mask of Achelous the greek river god with attributes and river reeds to the front. To the sides there are ormolu mounts depicting classical females collecting water from the stream. Set upon simple toupee feet. Stunning clock. Eight day silk suspension movement. France, circa 1805.
