CA0442 Fine George III Marble Relief Panel after Angelica Kauffmann

Rare and substantial late 18th / early 19th century George III Regency period pure white statuary marble panel carved in relief depicting Cupid bound to a tree by three nymphs or possibly the three Graces, after a painting 'The punishment of Cupid' by Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) and engraved in 1777 by William Wynne Ryland (1732-83). Beautifully carved centre piece relief from a chimneypiece frieze. Near perfect condition with only slight staining. Stands without support. Provenance: by repute reclaimed from a George III period house in London during an extensive refurbishment in the 1960s. English, circa 1790-1820.
