Very rare and beautiful mid 19th century Grand Tour neoclassical patinated bronze lucerna or library lamp signed B. Boschetti Roma. Benedetto Boschetti was central to the growing demand for high quality works of art created by the growing interest in the Grand Tour in Rome during the 19th century. Little is known about his life, but he is known to have produced a large number of classically inspired objects ranging from bronzes to table tops and mosaics. Active between 1820-1870, Boschetti exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851. His workshop was renowned for the exceptional quality of its copies 'after the Antique', mainly in marble and bronze. Cast in four sections: the lid is surmounted by a Capitoline egyptian lion, the reservoir of the lamp has a classical foliate design to the underside and a winged egyptian female burner spout, the handle is in the form of a finely cast griffin, the socle classically inspired foliate stem signed B. Boschetti Roma. Green porphyry block base. Italy, Rome, circa 1850.
